Colin M. Meehan

I’m a Senior here at Keene with a double major in History and Political Science and a Minor in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. For history, the topics I’m most interested in are the Civil War, the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the rise of fascism. Similarly, for political science a lot of my interest has been looking at the ideology of fascism and the far-right more broadly.

My project will be looking at Nazi views and opinions on the Confederate States and what they drew from their history, if anything. Both societies relied on slave labor to fuel their economies and justified this system with a racial ideology that placed one group over the other. Granted, it’s important not to stretch this too far, as the Confederate political system was far from fascism. But the Nazi interest in this period of time and what they learned from it can tell us a lot about both the Nazis and the American South before and during the war.
